I suppose it might undermine me a bit that I'm planning to dress up as a sexy firefly*, but...

Well, the dog costumes don't seem that much more ridiculous than any other not-designed-for-utility dog clothing I've seen. And the adult costumes, at least the people wearing them should be able to understand the implications of their choices.

It's some of the child costumes that get to me. Where I work we've got ones that say "ages 3-4" that would make me blush to imagine wearing if it was in my size. The sheer... stripperific-ness of it is amazing. I don't think we've got anything in the adult costumes that covers proportionately less. Ages 3 to 4! Even if most of them aren't nearly so bad... it just gets to me.

*In my defense, this more resembles dressing like a ten year old boy than it does anything in those pictures.

God, I hate 'sexy' Halloween costumes and those big Halloween party stores. A few years ago my boyfriend decided to dress as Shrek (we were taking his niece trick-or-treating and she loves Shrek), so I looked for a Princess Fiona costume to go along with it. Couldn't find one. Maybe because a floor-length medieval gown just doesn't cut it in terms of 'sexiness,' as there were tons of "sexy" costumes at the store.

This year I'm dressing as Mary Wollstonecraft, cobbling it together from various clothing items owned by my mother and myself. Much better than a sexy bee.

Agreed. And why is getting drunk the only way to have a fun "crazy" party? These people just aren't very creative.

Several comments have pointed out that women are often rewarded for objectifying themselves and being feminine. That is true, but it is only one side of the story: Women who are not feminine (read: pretty) enough are often enough severly punished.
That makes the concept of choice even more difficlut, because there is no neutral mode, in which women's looks do not have consquences.
Women do not have the choice between getting some rewards or not playing the game at all. They face the options of being rewarded or punished to varying degrees for how they look and since one has only very limited influence on one's appearance, these are not choices at all.

Halloween now not only requires women to wear their underthings out— just like Mardi Gras and New Years'— it also, much more importantly, requires everyone to get completely blackout drunk. (Just like St. Patrick's Day. And Independence Day. Oh, and Cinco de Mayo, because: why not?)

Two-fisted massively-multiplayer alcohol abuse is literally the only way to celebrate! I mean, that's just what people do. The inevitable attendant spike in violence and sexual assault? To be tsk-tsk-ed, but y'know, c'mon. Lighten up! Sure, sometimes things get a little, um, rowdy, but it's all in good fun! Gotta have a blowoff valve, you know? Or... something!

I like to party from time to time, but damn. Doesn't anyone see a problem with the increasingly traditional "gone-wild" atmosphere of seemingly every holiday? Even in the mellow little town where I now live, going out on certain holidays— Halloween in particular— feels way unsafe. It's seriously getting to the point where we need to "Take Back the E'en."
