Win you something!

25 Aug

Stickers (what they will say is TBD) and my autograph, to be exact. I’ve never signed my name “Nine Deuce” with a pen before, either, so you’ll get the first edition. (I’m not going to promise anything, but Jen just might throw a party for you, too.)

Here’s the deal: In a comment on my cougars post, Jen mentioned that she’d be fairly pumped if someone came up with a suitable derogatory term for men behaving like misogynistic dickfaces that would stick, and I can’t say I disagree. So, I’ve decided to put on a contest. Whoever coins the best term(s) for misogynistic dudes wins. The rules are:

  • It must be clever.
  • It must have some serious shaming potential. I know that there’s no way we can come up with a name for misogynistic men that carries the same kind of weight terms like “slut” or “cougar” do, but I want it to be something no one wants to be called.
  • It doesn’t have to be a general term; it could refer to men who take advantage of women sexually, it could refer to men who are all about fighting for their “right” to wank to women’s degradation, it could refer to men who do any shitty, anti-woman thing that bothers you a lot. I know my readers are all — like me — artistic as fuck, and I’m not about limiting people’s artistic expression.
  • You can submit as many as you like. Actually, I’d like to make the rule that you have to submit five or more, but I won’t. Still, the more the better.

The contest will end when this post falls off of my first page, which should happen in about seven to seventy days. We’ll see. The winner(s) will get an envelope from me with some stickers in it, my autograph on it, and possibly something else that happens to be sitting around when I seal the envelope. They’ll also see their new slang term employed regularly (credited, of course) here, and maybe even elsewhere (the goal, of course, is for the term or terms to catch on).

UPDATE: For those of you dumb enough to accuse me of holding a contest to come up with gendered insults, I’ll just tell you you’re wrong. The insults I’m looking for are character-based, which you’d have noticed if you’d read the rules. I didn’t ask people to make up derogatory names for men, but rather misogynists. Duh, again.

Well, damn. I can’t think of anything right now, but I’ll be watching this thread with lots of interest. It’s about time we had equivalent words for dudes.
I’ve occasionally called guys sluts; and the meaning comes across but I don’t know if we could ever make it gender-neutral. For one, I usually use it to mean guys who, when they GET casual sex, then treat the woman like a jerk after or during: demean her, lie about calling her, etc. (One guy told me a story about how he liked to anal violate a girl during sex, as he was about to orgasm. He called it his ‘finishing move’. How this guy still had testicles, I’ll never know.)
When guys use slut, it’s just to describe a woman who’s having more sex than they think she should. Gah. Also, I’ve noted the trend of saying “man-slut”, which is saying that the default state of ‘sluttiness’ is woman. Thanks.
Anyway… shutting up for the moment.

  2. AgrarianJustice August 25, 2008 at 6:12 AM #

    Rapist
    Pedophile
    Child Molester

Does those fit within the contest rules?

  3. Nine Deuce August 25, 2008 at 6:50 AM #

Of course those do. But I’m thinking of slang terms for dudes who are generally gross but have yet to commit a crime (even under Deuce’s Law).

  4. Patricia August 25, 2008 at 10:36 AM #

Hmm. I’ll be racking my creative juices for this one. It is something we’re suppose to make up, is it?

If so, would something like “testofuck” fall in line? Sort of like a contraction of testosterone-riddled-fucknut.

  5. Laurel August 25, 2008 at 12:16 PM #

    Porndog
Bimbob (perhaps this is too close to “manslut”)
    Dickferbrains

Dang, it’s not easy coming up with something none of them would ever want to be called.

    Eunuch?

  6. atheist woman August 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM #

Well, as a general insult for a misogynistic asshole, what about “vomit-swimmer” cause he spews so much shit he could swim in it? I know, I know, weak. I could not think of anything because all the ones I could were already insults that men take with pride! Like motherfucker. They like that. UGh.

  7. ecto_plasm August 25, 2008 at 2:34 PM #

If you want an animal metaphor an Armadillo can be an insecure man who projects a hardened hypermasculine image to the world while making the fetal position and sucking his thumb inside hoping that no cougar teeth and claws break through his defenses and expose his soft delusional underbelly.

  8. bonobobabe August 25, 2008 at 2:42 PM #

I don’t know if this is something that could ever work. First of all, the behavior we’re insulting is not perceived to be bad by men. So, they wouldn’t give a shit. Secondly, if we come up with a word they wouldn’t want to be called, it would have to be something that DOES insult them, and at this point, that would be words that imply they are female or gay…not cool.

I was thinking a “Kobe”, after NBA douchnozzle Kobe Bryant, but having listened to my fair share of sports talk, I know that guys still pretty much cum in their pants thinking about him, so that’s probably out. I’ll have to get the braintrust working on this one.

I like “armadillo” — it’d take some explaining, but so does “cougar” for the uninitiated.

I’m also thinking in terms of my comment on the cougars post — women are always called animal names, and we’re looking for woman-hating names, so… Kitten-killer? Bird-broiler? Bunny-burner?

I personally like “kitten-killer” — who wants a guy who kills kittens or who treats women like they’re kittens or who generally treats women like animals?

  15. Dan August 26, 2008 at 12:58 AM #

I once knew someone who took offence at being called a chick and responded by calling men roosters. Personally I think that is pretty weak, however I think calling a man a Cock is a good response to both Couger and Cunt.

  16. Maggie Hays August 26, 2008 at 1:18 AM #

“Misogynist dick-for-brains”, how does that sound?

it could refer to men who take advantage of women sexually, it could refer to men who are all about fighting for their “right” to wank to women’s degradation

How about “pro-pornstitution-jerkoff”? or “rape culture-lover”? or “pornstitution-patriarchist”? or “rape-pornoiachist”? or “porniarchy-defender”? or simply “misogynist scumbag”, I dunno…

    Just thoughts, Nine… just thoughts…

I like hyena. That brings to mind a creepy guy who is in the habit of getting teenage girls drunk and taking advantage of them.

What about smegma? It’s the dirt that collects behind the foreskin from poor hygiene.

  19. ecto_plasm August 26, 2008 at 5:05 AM #

“Jock Itch” is awesome. It’s two syllables, and it’s offensive and disgusting as hell. I’m a man, and if someone called me a Jock Itch, I would at least be shocked, if not just a little impressed. If someone called me a Pornstitution-Patriarchist, I’d giggle and politely ask them to say that 5 times fast. “Motherfucker” is just about the only four syllable English swear I can imagine that gets a reaction (but thanks to Scarface and Sammy J, not much of one). The best swears have a staccato violence to them, like a gunshot. If your out of breath by the time you have finished insulting someone, generally they laugh in your face, so jargon and portmanteau words are not really effective verbal weapons, which is what you want, if you truly want an equivalent to words like Cunt. First off, they need to be anatomical, second, they need to sound mean, which generally means consonants. Jerkoff, Numbnuts, Needledick, Pencilcock, Cheesedick, Gooch, Taint, Grundle, or Chode are all undesirable nicknames. Ugliness and offensiveness wins the day in a cuss-out. Also: Moral Flexibility.

  20. Jim August 26, 2008 at 6:11 AM #

Maybe it’s not reached America, but calling somebody a dickhead is quite common.

I have to say, I’m puzzled by your attitude though.

    > Don’t be an asshole. If all you have to say is “cunt” this and “whore” that, I ain’t giving you an audience.

You approve of gendered insults now?

  21. Nine Deuce August 26, 2008 at 7:07 AM #

I’m just trying to level the playing field, man. Besides, these only apply to misogynists, which makes them character-based, not gender-based. You’re not an MRA, are you?

  22. JulyJuniper August 26, 2008 at 6:22 PM #

I’m quite partial to porndog, but i don’t think it would be insulting enough. I really like saying asshat.
On the terms of animals, I was thinking bunny-chaser, that also, is not that insulting and sounds sorta cutesy.
anyway, i like the idea of naming men because i work with victims of domestic violence and i daily curse those dickwads.

I love Binbob and Hyena best. *Starts using them immediately* I’ll get round to making Urban dictionary posts for them at some point, if I start using them that’s the first place people will start looking…. I think about these things waaaaay too much.

  25. A. Jeff August 26, 2008 at 10:29 PM #

I don’t think something like ‘eunuch’ or anything referring to being dickless would be appropriate, since a dickless man is really only a woman (sarcasm noted?). Jung said all that crap about women being unfulfilled because they had no penis.

What about… Neuman? Inspired by the utter hatred and contempt with which the name is spoken on Seinfeld.

Or ploughboy? I just saw it in an Engrish e-mail, under a pic of the playboy bunny. So a ploughboy is really just a grossly unsuccessful playboy.

  28. Luke August 27, 2008 at 4:36 PM #

Guys, I’m so sorry. Hyena is a very good word, but it’s already got 5 definitions on urban dictionary AND TWO OF THEM ARE MISOGYNISTIC (one is the name of a song). It’s defined as a cougar who’s not sexy enough to be a cougar, and as a feminist who wants to massacre men.

That sucks. But who (or what) to blame…?

  29. D August 28, 2008 at 2:03 AM #

    “pro-pornstitution-jerkoff”? or “rape culture-lover”? or “pornstitution-patriarchist”? or “rape-pornoiachist”? or “porniarchy-defender”? or simply “misogynist scumbag”, I dunno…

    Just thoughts, Nine… just thoughts…

Then you’d have to use those for all the “cougars”, too. Since you’re looking for an equivalent term for “cougar” or “slut”, well, for those women that get called those, instead, would you want them called “rape-pornoaichist” (Wow, if you’re going to invent ludicrous words, at least make them pronounceable. Seriously.)

Also, women have been calling men a couple of animal related names for any and all behaviour for a long, long time. Much longer than “cougar” has existed.

Women have called men “pigs” and “dogs” for well longer than I’ve been alive.

So, you’re holding a contest to ask for people to come up with something…that’s already been in use for, well, ever.

(Also, “dickface”, and the like ARE gendered insults. It’s implying that dick=bad, therefore anything with a dick=bad. Just like “cunt” and “pussy”. The implication is the same. I’d like to ask you to refrain from using genitalia-based insults, for the same reason you’d not like to hear ones based on female genitalia.)

Sorry for the triple-post, but also, “parasite” is also a pretty good animal insult since they’re universally despised, and group Men’s existence with respect to group Woman could well be described as parasitic.

  37. bonobobabe August 29, 2008 at 2:05 AM #

Dude, haven’t you been paying attention?

Calling a man a dick is NOT the same as calling a woman a c*nt.. Just like calling a white person a cracker or a honky (I am dating myself) does not pack the same wallop as the N word. In fact, the N word is so bad, I won’t even write it. That tells you something.

So, due to the oppression of women and people of color, even if the women and POC are doing the same things the white male patriarchs are doing, it doesn’t mean the same thing.

So quit acting like a big baby over whether or not someone calls you a dick. You still run the show so knock it off.

  38. D August 29, 2008 at 5:27 AM #

I was talking about men, not women. Nine asked us to be creative and find new words.

Yes, an equivalent for cougar. Yours were not equivalent. Your offense at women being called by those names shows it. If you would consider them no worse than “cougar”, an equivalent has been found.

However, since you apparently think them worse, you’ve not created an equivalent.

An older man perving on younger women isn’t a rapist, nor do they have anything to do with rape culture, nor can you accurately say that they like porn, hate women, defend porn, or any of the other things you said.

Unless, of course, older women that perv on younger men love porn, patriarchy, hate women (or men), etcetera.

So, patriarchists, do not ever try to control my language. I use terms I wanna use for misogynist porn-loving men, whether you like them or not. Patriarchy has invented the language, so I invent the new terms I want to as I please.

Language is controlling your language. Homemade neologisms and unpronounceable portmanteaus are not “terms”. They are gibberish. Patriarchy didn’t invent language. Millions of years of evolution and communication invented language. We moved from grunts to articulate grunts, to simple words, to language.

Inventing new terms won’t get you taken seriously. That has nothing to do with patriarchy. If I walked down the street babbling made up words at people, I’d be considered insane, or an idiot.

Much like Bush, and his inability to use words that actually exist in English. He looks and sounds like a moron every time one dribbles out of his chimpanzee face.

Please stop misrepresenting my views. Please stop attacking me.

It’s not an “attack”. Pointing out that your portmanteaus are ridiculous, and (in one case) unpronounceable (which, being able to actually SAY a word aloud is sort of important to it’s existence) isn’t attacking you.

Calling a man a dick is NOT the same as calling a woman a c*nt

Yes, it is. One has just become more comfortable and common in use.

Calling someone a derogatory term for their genitalia still implies that said genitals are bad, and a person who is referred to by that name is also bad, because of the association.

It’s completely unrelated to the issue of race. Cunt is a slang, foul term for vagina. Dick is a slang, foul term for penis. Cunt was not used as a term for all females, for hundreds of years, with no other term being used.

The infamous N word, however, was. Therein lies the difference. They had no other identifier. That’s why it’s such an evil, disgusting term. Their entire identity and humanity was swallowed into that word, while they were whipped, killed, hanged, and worse.

Women have never had such an association with cunt.

It’s actually kind of offensive that you attempt to relate the two.

it doesn’t mean the same thing.

As I stated above, it does. “Dick=bad, you=dick, so you=bad”.

It doesn’t matter which side of it you’re on, it’s still implying hatred of those genitals, and the gender that has them.

You can’t honestly defend one gendered insult while attacking another.

You don’t make progress by saying “Get rid of that sexism over there, but damn you, I’m hanging onto mine!”.

Because then what? Once true, pure equality is reached, cunt will still be a “bad word”, but dick will still be okay? Cock, peckerhead, and the others, too? Because they’re common?

No. Much like you have to be rid of benevolent sexism to be rid of ALL sexism, you have to get rid of ALL gendered insults. Not just the ones YOU don’t like.

You still run the show so knock it off.

I’m pretty certain you know nothing about me.

  39. Rainah August 29, 2008 at 5:34 AM #

How about “craddle robber” for the reverse of cougar. Porn/rape-fiend?

  40. Maggie Hays August 29, 2008 at 12:39 PM #

Patriarchy didn’t invent language. Millions of years of evolution and communication invented language. We moved from grunts to articulate grunts, to simple words, to language.

    I don’t agree with you.

    you’ve not created an equivalent.

Well, maybe not. But I use terms I want to as I please…

    “Ridiculous” or “ludicrous” is insulting.

If you brought up new terms on this thread (that I don’t like), I wouldn’t even criticize them, for the sake of being polite and nice. And you’ve not been polite to me…

(Hey 92; sorry this is the first time I’ve commented on your blog — I’ll try to give you a call in the next few days.) As one of the straight white men burdened with running the show, I think it is important that the little ladies have a few words of their own to throw back at passing ruffians… But seriously, one of the problems is that our culture has created such a cult of barbarism that to call someone a “rapist” or “porndog”, beyond simply making the caller appear foolish in that person’s eyes (who may then dismiss them as a feminazi, bitch, cunt, et cetera), may even appeal to the general sentiment that porn-addiction is just a sign of a healthy libido, and rape either the prerogative of masculinity or a harmless euphemism for personal accomplishment, as evidenced by countless mild-mannered college students who use it to describe their triumph over the latest mid-term. The only effective insults are the ones which threaten the target’s masculinity, thereby reinforcing the target’s already distorted regard for said masculinity. That said, here are a few suggestions, which I am probably not the first to think of:

    Chode-Chaser
    Jizz monger
Phallocrat (usable only against the educated)
Porn-junkie, Pornologist (although see warning above)
    Prickhole
    Scrote-Scrubber
    Sperm debtor

  43. Nine Deuce August 30, 2008 at 2:22 AM #

Jesus, isidro, I didn’t know you were such a foul-mouthed hooligan. But seriously, I like these. I agree that the only real way to shame a dude these days is to impugn his masculinity, but I think that should be off-limits, since that’d mean, as you and bonobobabe said, feminizing him. I suppose I’m asking the impossible, but I’m still taking entries, if only to add to my arsenal of insults to use in my blogular discussions of male behavior.

D says: “An older man perving on younger women isn’t a rapist, nor do they have anything to do with rape culture”

Are you seriously fucking kidding on me? What is your definition of perving? Because I’m pretty sure we’re talking about the creepy older guy hanging around at the party or bar. Clearly you haven’t been around these guys if you don’t think they do things like “accidentally” brushing up against or falling into women who don’t want to be touched by them, or trying to get the women around him drunk while staying sober himself, or asking women he’s never met before personal sexual questions, or just straight up putting his hands all over women who either freeze uncomfortably or shove him away. Creepy men create a culture in which women are afraid and in which women are sexually threatened by men they are not comfortable with, even if rape or a sexual harassment lawsuit is not the outcome. That’s RAPE CULTURE, even if it often falls short of our current legal definitions of rape.

Additionally, you keep acting as if “cougar” is the only word we’re trying to come up with an equivalent for. That’s only one of many on the list. In addition to needing a word for men who habitually date younger women, we also need equivalents for other behaviors commonly used to make the world an uncomfortable place for women. Also, remember that “cougar” is a derogatory word for women who habitually date younger men, not women who “perv on” younger men or otherwise exhibit creepy behavior.

You also say that “cunt” is not equivalent to “nigger” and that the comparison is offensive. You’re completely missing the point. The argument is not that “nigger” and “cunt” are equally offensive, but rather that they are both words deployed by a dominant power group to subordinate those with less power. They both have greater force than corollary words like “honky” and “dick.” Most whites I know laugh at the word honky, and most men take “dick” as a compliment. Notsomuch true for “nigger” and “cunt.” It’s not about quantifying the oppression of black males and comparing it to the oppression of white women, it’s about the fact that the white supremacy/patriarchy gets swear words which convey the weight of oppression. Blacks and women don’t have words with an equivalent weight.

You question why a truly equal society would need equivalents to words like “cunt.” You’re right, it wouldn’t, because “cunt” wouldn’t exist as a demeaning word in the first place, so you wouldn’t need an equivalent. But that’s NOT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. We have to find ways of living under patriarchy as it exists NOW, because it’s not going away any time soon. One of those ways is to keep trying to get equal linguistic footage. A world where women have demeaning sexual words for men that equal the power of the demeaning sexual words for women is preferable to one where only men have those words. Because a world where two (relatively) equal sides fight is infinitely more fair than one where one side has a weapon and beats the shit out of a defenseless person. In short, living under patriarchy, we need some linguistic weapons of our own.

But even then, Nine calls specifically for words for particular behaviors, not men as a whole

P.S. Caps lock isn’t shouting. It’s emphasis. I don’t know how to do italics on this form.

but rather that they are both words deployed by a dominant power group to subordinate those with less power.

    Neg.

“Nigger” was developed for the sole purpose of insulting and subordinating black people.

“Cunt” has only been used as an insult since around about the 19th century, despite the word existing for roughly 6-700 years prior to that.

So, much like vulgar terms for male genitalia existed prior to being used as insults, so did cunt.

    • Imaginary September 29, 2009 at 12:44 AM #

Nigger= comes from the Latin word “niger”, that being an ADJECTIVE meaing black. It wasn’t originally an offensive word. I’d ask you to actually learn about something before you speak of it, but then, I’ve read your previous posts so I don’t hope for much, only that you don’t choke to death on your own mucus.

  52. Nine Deuce September 2, 2008 at 3:22 AM #

Yes, D, maybe, but what we’re talking about is how people use the terms now.

  53. Screaming Lemur September 2, 2008 at 5:25 AM #

Shorter D: “I have a penis, so I think I’m always right, so I am! You silly women just don’t know what you’re talking about. Ha ha!”
It’s all been said before. Your semantics suck, and so does your attitude. YOU don’t get to tell an oppressed group what is offensive. If you are part of that group, you still don’t get to speak for all of them re: what’s offensive. Want it in LOLcat speak? “Validity: you does not has it”.
Sorry 9-2, I’m just not up for being patient with ‘em tonight.

  54. D September 2, 2008 at 12:44 PM #

I’m just pointing out that the origins are vastly different, and that to even compare them in a similar light is rather offensive.

And that the origins of current use of “dick/cock/pecker” are a lot closer to “cunt/pussy/etc” than “cunt” and “nigger” are.

    That’s all.

  55. D September 2, 2008 at 6:25 PM #

“I have a penis, so I think I’m always right, so I am! You silly women just don’t know what you’re talking about. Ha ha!”

No, but it’s telling that you dismiss things in such a way.

For one to admit an error is fine, refusing to believe one made an error, and instead claiming that I’m just making stuff up because I’m male and want to tell you what to do, is not fine.

It’s not semantics to point out that comparing the two words is literally apples and oranges. Or that “dick” and “cunt” are a hell of a lot closer in origins and use.

To take a page from your book, being a feminist doesn’t automatically make everything you say correct.

If you make an error on the history of the language, I intend to call you on it.

That said, nowhere did I say “You can’t find it offensive”.

I don’t care what you find offensive, really. You can find the word ‘tree’ offensive if you like.

All I did was point out that how a word was used and created (vulgarity for genitalia) doesn’t mean that it’s current purpose was it’s only purpose.

That said, people will continue to use it, forever, the end. Unless you want to censor speech and control language. Which, ironically, is usually the first step of an oppressor.

  56. Nine Deuce September 2, 2008 at 6:49 PM #

D – There is a problem with your comparison: it doesn’t take into account the cultural and societal power differential between men and women, which was what the original commenter was pointing to when she compared female gender-based insults to the n-word. I agree that cunt has a lot in common in the sense you are referring to with dick, but it also has a lot in common with the n-word in the sense that it is used by people in a position of power to denigrate people that are oppressed. The same cannot be said of its use in the other direction. Stop pretending not to understand that. It’s insulting.

And you know damn well that we aren’t talking about censorship, but rather trying to change cultural attitudes. No more straw men allowed.

  57. D September 4, 2008 at 5:00 AM #

I agree that cunt has a lot in common in the sense you are referring to with dick, but it also has a lot in common with the n-word in the sense that it is used by people in a position of power to denigrate people that are oppressed.

It also holds other purposes. Hell, I’ve heard very feminist women use it to refer to nothing more than their vagina.

On stage. At a concert, no less.

Yes, omg, the person some people are setting up as evil, quite often sees Ani live.

Point being, it holds other purposes. It’s also applied to men, things, situations.

“Nigger” exists for one purpose. It only ever had ONE purpose. It still only has ONE purpose.

(I don’t count the modern “reclaiming” of it as an additional purpose, mind.)

It’s a word that never had another meaning.

Cunt always has, and still does.

I think what bothers me when you equate the use of nigger with “oppressed people” and the use of cunt with “oppressed people”, is that one group was completely, wholly subjugated, destroyed and reduced to a LEGAL status of less than human. Literally. Even after freedom was granted, they were still only written to count, legally, as 3/5ths of a person.

Your phrasing makes one seem much, much worse than it is, and makes the other seem much, much less.

I hope you don’t take offense at that, I’m just offering my perspective on why I react the way I do.

And you know damn well that we aren’t talking about censorship, but rather trying to change cultural attitudes. No more straw men allowed.

Hey, I’m just pointing out the dangerous road of language control.

You have the power to stop being offended by a word, but you don’t (or shouldn’t) have the power to force people to stop saying it.

  58. Nine Deuce September 4, 2008 at 9:51 PM #

I also have the power to explain the connotations of the word to people so they can reconsider whether they want to use it, which is what I’m doing here. What, are you trying to censor me?

  59. Screaming Lemur September 5, 2008 at 2:36 AM #

And again, Feminism 101, dude. YOU do not get to tell an oppressed group what should and shouldn’t be offensive, or WHY they “shouldn’t find it offensive”. Even if you were a woman, you still wouldn’t be able to say that, since one does not speak for all. You really shouldn’t play Oppression Olympics (“Well, this word is more offensive than that word”), because that’s a big neon sign that you’re an idiot.
And as for the ‘power to stop being offended by a word’? That is the most priveleged, ass-tastic statement I’ve heard all week. So even if Nine doesn’t take offense, I’M offended by your total if-I-don’t-experience-it-it-must-not-exist refusal to get what’s been explained to you more than once. You don’t understand shit.

  60. D September 5, 2008 at 5:59 AM #

YOU do not get to tell an oppressed group what should and shouldn’t be offensive, or WHY they “shouldn’t find it offensive”.

You shouldn’t use quotes unless you’re quoting someone.

Considering I never said that, you can’t really quote it.

I never said you can’t find it offensive. I simply said you can’t order people not to say it, just because you don’t like it.

You really shouldn’t play Oppression Olympics (”Well, this word is more offensive than that word”), because that’s a big neon sign that you’re an idiot.

It was brought up by another poster, attempting to draw a parallel between the two words. The rest of the discussion was pointing out that the comparison was apples and oranges.

Will you now call that poster an idiot?

And as for the ‘power to stop being offended by a word’? That is the most priveleged, ass-tastic statement I’ve heard all week. So even if Nine doesn’t take offense, I’M offended by your total if-I-don’t-experience-it-it-must-not-exist refusal to get what’s been explained to you more than once. You don’t understand shit.

Uh huh. Well, who else has that power? It has nothing to do with “privilege”, unless you expect men to stop using the word because YOU don’t like it. Which sounds a hell of a lot like someone acting entitled and privileged, to me.

You can choose not to be offended by a term.

Again, nowhere did I say the statements or attitudes you attribute to me. Don’t assume my thoughts. It’s rude.

  61. Alyx September 6, 2008 at 4:02 PM #

D, you can choose to stop being an asshole.

You’ve now successfully derailed something I found interesting and turned it into “But what about the menz?”.

  62. D September 6, 2008 at 6:20 PM #

My eternal response to that is to say that you turn everything into a “what about the womenz?”

Also, where have I said “But what about the men?” ? Oh, right, I didn’t.

In fact, NOWHERE did I ask “What about the men?” or anything even related to it.

Seriously, are these buzzwords and catchphrases from the feminist blogosphere so ingrained into some people’s minds that you just use them without even really seeing that they don’t apply half the time?

  63. Screaming Lemur September 6, 2008 at 8:34 PM #

    “What about the womenz?”
Sparky, this is A FEMINIST BLOG. That’s a big part of what this is, in fact, about. If you don’t like it, go find an MRA website where you can discuss men’s issue’s to your heart’s content.
And you have indeed attempted to derail this thread. Several times. And the webmistress has told you to stop.
It’s ridiculous to imply something and when called on it, coyly respond “oh, but that’s not what I SAID”. Several people have gotten your implications and been annoyed by them, so I’m gonna say their complaints about you do indeed apply.
    Please stop being antagonistic now.

  64. Nine Deuce September 6, 2008 at 8:50 PM #

I agree. This thread is for contest entries and feminist discourse only. I know, I’m a fascist.

  65. Laurel September 6, 2008 at 9:15 PM #

    How about “D-railer”?

Or, for an adjective, “D-class,” as in “you’re acting like a D-class threadspoodger” (jerk, choad, whatever).

  66. Ferret September 7, 2008 at 2:25 AM #

D, re: your comment on the oppression of blacks/women.
Dude, open a history book. It is only in the last 200 years or so that women have not been considered property. and that’s just in the westren world. In asia, africa, and south america many countries still consider women as property, sub human, something to be bought and sold. IIRC, it wasn’t untill the late 1800s to the early 1900s in AMERICA that women began to gain “human” status. Yes, after the civil war, laws were passed that kept black people from claiming their rights. Guess what, black people and women fought back and now have rights. Now, just in case you missed it, I’m going to spell it out for you. This is a feminist web site. We care about issues that relate to women. All women. And just in case you missed this, the word cunt is offensive. So are the words dick, cock, nigger, slut and whore. The point of this thread is to find a word that men find equally offensive, so that maybe a few of the smarter ones who simply never thought about it might think about it and stop using offensive words to describe women. “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, is the concept we are dealing with right now. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t. If you don’t like it go away.
Nine Deuce, sorry to encourage the derail. Douchewipes like this really piss me off.

  67. D September 7, 2008 at 7:55 AM #

Sparky, this is A FEMINIST BLOG. That’s a big part of what this is, in fact, about. If you don’t like it, go find an MRA website where you can discuss men’s issue’s to your heart’s content.

#1. If you don’t like terms like “sweetie”, etcetera, don’t call me “Sparky”.

#2, again, where did I discuss any “men’s issues”? Oh, right, nowhere.

Like I said, you’re so dead set on labeling people, you don’t even check to see which label you grab, or if it even applies. You just reach in the hat, pull one out, and stick it on.

And you have indeed attempted to derail this thread. Several times.

Don’t change your story, thanks. You didn’t accuse me of “derailing the thread”, you accused me of “what about the menz”, which I didn’t do.

When you’re caught in a lie/mistake/false assumption, just own it.

And the webmistress has told you to stop.

    Where?

It’s ridiculous to imply something and when called on it, coyly respond “oh, but that’s not what I SAID”. Several people have gotten your implications and been annoyed by them, so I’m gonna say their complaints about you do indeed apply.

It’s ridiculous to read something about comparing the words “cunt” and “nigger” and somehow think that applies to “What about the men?”, and then attack someone based on your completely off-base assumption.

There’s no “implication” about men involved in that. The fact that you see one is your problem, not mine.

    Please stop being antagonistic now.

I’d ask the same of you, considering you’re attacking me based on your imagination.

And just in case you missed this, the word cunt is offensive. So are the words dick, cock, nigger, slut and whore. The point of this thread is to find a word that men find equally offensive, so that maybe a few of the smarter ones who simply never thought about it might think about it and stop using offensive words to describe women.

Yeah, it offends you. We’ve been over this. My point was, women have never been reduced to “cunt”. Cunt was not created as a word used to describe women. That use is historically quite recent, and it never shed it’s original use in the process. My point moved to the fact that “nigger” was created to describe black people. To put their entire identity in a slur. It never had any other use.

Therein lies the difference. Yes, you’re offended by the use of “cunt”, but you can never be as offended by “cunt”, as a black person is by “nigger”, simply because of the history and connotations of the word.

Cunt only recently became a slur. Nigger has always been one, and nothing else. You see what I’m getting at here?

That said, I’m sorry that you don’t seem to find words that men find as offensive. In general, males react differently to different stimulus. The societal whys and hows are irrelevant here.

That’s why I brought up the simple fact that it’s going to continue being offensive to you as long as you allow it to. If people use a word and see it has no effect, they’ll be less likely to use it. If they know it’s a sore point, they’ll use it.

Some people find “fuck” offensive. Would you like people to cease using that? I posit that the words you don’t like will always be in use. It’s how you react to them that you control. You know you can’t control the language, but you can control your responses to it.

“do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

Or in some cases, “Do unto others before they do unto you”, as in the case of Nine’s preemptive insulting that started this whole contest.

Douchewipes like this really piss me off.

Again with the insults. Call me all the names you like. Sticks and stones, you know. I know the content of my character doesn’t fit your ill attempted labels and insults, so your words do not affect me.

    • Imaginary September 29, 2009 at 12:51 AM #

Nigger has not always been an offensive word.

I bet if you put a pin to his head, it would pop and fllyyyyyyyy around the room like the big empty balloon it is. He he. Isn’t it cute that he thinks he knows what’s going on?

  68. stormy September 7, 2008 at 1:15 PM #

    D-railer said:

Oh FFS. Women didn’t start getting the vote in most countries until the early-mid 20th century, even early suffrage was not full suffrage.

In many places in the world, females are still regarded as (men’s) property.

Stop pretending to even know anything about women’s history and suffering, you phallocrat.

  69. Nine Deuce September 7, 2008 at 3:40 PM #

D – You are, in fact, guilty of both derailing the thread and of “what about the men.” They are one and the same in this case, because instead of allowing women to discuss something that we’ve deemed interesting/worthwhile, you’ve come here and insinuated yourself into the discussion and basically demanded that we address YOUR positions and opinions INSTEAD of our own. And your demand that Screaming Lemur stop using the word “sparky” lest she need to prepare herself to accept being called “sweetie” is a perfect example of a “what about the men” argument. This post, unless you’re a misogynistic asshole, is NOT ABOUT YOU, so you don’t need to engage over it. That you are doing so means you’d prefer to force us to talk about you than let us talk about what we want to.

For examples of where I’ve told you to stop, see my explanation of the difference between the c-word and terms for male genitalia and my last comment. Or did you not bother to read those, instead using my blog as a place to push your views on people without being willing to take theirs into account?

Cunt may not have been invented to dehumanize women, but it certainly is used that way now. STOP PRETENDING YOU ARE TOO STUPID TO GET THAT, OR GET OFF MY FUCKING BLOG. The word has an effect similar to the n-word, and the responsibility for that lies with the person who would use it to hurt someone, not with the person it’s being leveled at. To say we’re in control of things because we can decide not to get upset at being called cunts is disingenuous and just plain arrogant. It says, “I reserve the right to call you a cunt or a nigger, and if you get upset, it’s YOUR fault.” Absurd. You see, you can take an insult like douchewipe and say “sticks and stones” because, if you are a male, it has no real power over you. There is no power asymmetry manifesting itself in an insult directed at a man, so he can laugh it off, AS I SAID IN THE FUCKING POST. The same is not true of gendered insults going in the other direction. It is the responsibility of feminists not to control language, which you pretend our aim is, but to make people aware of the effects of their actions, which is all I’m doing. If you want to tell me I’m in the wrong for suggesting someone not call women cunts (or any other gendered insult), you’re the one trying to control language.

You’re one inch from being banned as a nuisance from this entire blog, and you are no longer going to post on this thread. Good day.

dam, still no contest winner? i just like contests! g

  72. isme September 20, 2008 at 7:23 AM #

Well, I did like “dickblister”, which someone said while back.

Personally, I’d like to suggest “he-tard”.

Not wishing to start another long argument about the word “cunt”…but…surely the word can’t be so offensive purely because it refers to female anatomy, and not to male?

I mean, though it’d be more or less impossible to come up with an accurate ranking of which words were considered the most offensive, and to who (by gender and by location…in some areas of the world “cunt” is much less offensive, though hardly polite), that particular word is generally considered to be much more offensive than words like “pussy” or “twat” et al which have the same literal meaning.

As an aside, it always seems odd to me that people use words for sexual organs and sexual acts an insults. I mean, if you were to take a vow of chastity, forgoing all earthly pleasures, then what people have between their legs and what they do with them might seem terrible to you, otherwise not so much.

As to insults based on the size of various bits people have…well, they can be effective, but it does seem to be missing the point to criticise the inches rather than whatever the issue really was. As an aside, is there a female equivalent to “having balls”, though? One that isn’t an insult, I mean.

  73. Laurelin September 27, 2008 at 8:02 AM #

I’ve seen ‘that takes ovaries’ as an equivalent to ‘having balls’, which I like.

    • Imaginary September 29, 2009 at 12:53 AM #

I say “laser tits” but that’s just me.

  74. isme September 28, 2008 at 5:33 AM #

I suppose, though it seems to be lacking something…maybe it just needs to be used more.

  75. Imaginary November 30, 2009 at 7:15 AM #

Wow I’ve submitted a lot of comments for this page.

I find that saying “cock” with enough force or laughing at them while you say it tends to work a bit. “Stupid cock” “Lazy cock” “Useless cock” “Diseased cock”.

  76. lizor November 30, 2009 at 7:01 PM #

I’ve been using “scrote” and “smeg-head”. I am now adding “he-tard” to my list.

    Thanks!
