I’d say a bit of everything, Nine. Men want to look at this kind of shit and young girls are trained to look “sexy” because MTV & stuff say so (I say that, that makes me think about your previous post) but patriarchy has constructed our culture. Most men jerk off to pornography (the literal dehumanization of women) and they want to see images and hear stories that celebrate porn on TV. And the corporate pimps capitalize on that. . . And so on. . .

I can’t even turn on a TV anymore. We’re living in such a pornified culture that objectifies women, it makes me sick! To me, watching MTV is like watching soft-core porn. No thanks.

*Sigh*…I miss Daria, and even Beavis and Butt-head. I wish the ’90′s could come back. No such thing as “reality TV”, most people didn’t own a cell phone yet (at least, not in my neck of the woods), no Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, and no 9/11 or Iraq….Christ, things are so shitty these days!

In the case of the second episode you mention, I can’t help but wonder if it’s all a big scam, set up by the participants. What if the exes never actually broke up, found another couple and decided to pretend to all be dating each others’ mates so they could get an all-expense-paid sexy vacation on the beach? And laugh at MTV in the process? Makes enough sense, considering how things turned out. I’m not saying that is what happened, but I could totally see people doing that.

I’m going to have to say…does MTV EVER do anything original?

In other words, I’ve already seen this show. In 2001. It was called “Temptation Island” back then, though.

Marginally different, I’ll admit, but the things offered, right down to the “audio or video” options? Yeah. Not original at all.

Though, you have to admit, on some level, shows like these wouldn’t exist if people didn’t watch them. It’s the modern-day Roman Coliseum.

There’s still that dark part in most humans that revels in suffering, as long as it’s someone else that’s doing the suffering.

I’d also venture to say that, (as bad as this sounds), what MTV is showing as “love”…isn’t really all that far off from reality.

A lot of people have complete disregard for each other’s feelings. Treat each other like absolute crap, cheat, lie, etcetera.

Art imitating life, or life imitating art?
