A few things

I’ve got a few posts brewing somewhere in the basement, but for now I have a few things I want to ask. First, are there any of you out there who have put me on your blogroll, but do not see yourselves on mine? If so, please send me a comment or an e-mail and I’ll remedy the situation ASAP. Second, how do you feel about advertising? I am toying with the idea of Google ads, since I am a poor grad student, but I’m really not into annoying my readers with ads, or the idea of being a sellout.

Update: I’ve decided against ads and opted for a donation button.  I just couldn’t handle the thought of Google Adsense trying to sell Lancome on this page, nor did I want to annoy my readers with ads for mortgage refinancing.

  1. I don’t see anything wrong with the advertisement idea. Google ads in particular are not very intrusive and don’t hog bandwidth or page space. I say go for it.

  2. Your blog is the shit. I’ve definitely got you on my bookmarks, but my blogroll needs a total re-do anyway so I don’t think you’re there yet.

  3. I’m not sure how i happened upon it, but I do enjoy yer blog very much. I’ve got you listed in my blogroll, but my blog is not nearly so interesting as to deserve reciprocation.

  4. first of all, i just want to tell you that i enjoy reading you very much.
back when i kept up a blog a couple of years ago, i had trouble getting google ads on my site because of ‘content violations’, meaning that i dropped the occasional four-letter bomb. unless their policy has changed, you might have trouble for all your references to porn, as positive as they are. not to mention that google ads more often than not end up advertising something kind of objectionable on your page. but the money can be good, this much is true.
you might consider a donation system? i’ve heard good things, but never tried them myself…

  5. You’re on my blogroll :)

I don’t mind if you don’t want to put me on your blogroll because I mainly putter around in my own little world instead of writing anything insightful.

I’d read your blog, adds or no adds.

  6. I’ve been really enjoying your blog for a while, and I’ve learned a lot about feminism I think, which, for sadly obvious reasons, seems to be the last “main” topic most male activists tend to get into (beyond saying they’re against sort of basic sexism). So thanks, you are changing things.

As for the ads, I don’t know how much you will mind about this, but Google have a pretty attrocious record of working with totalitarian governments to “restrict content,” mainly in China (http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2005/09/13/the-net-censors/). I do have a gmail address, and sometimes use youtube, but still, its the case, and advertising is particularly fucking evil for other reasons. There is also the added danger that the ads would show things you disagree with because of keywords. And your site is actually rather attractive, and it wouldn’t be anymore. Personally I wouldnt like it, but I wouldnt judge you or stop reading.

Maybe a paypal button would be more in-line with your feelings? I’m sure some people would give enough to cover your website costs.

  7. James – Yeah, all in all, the ad thing seemed inappropriate and more trouble that it would be worth. I decided to go with the Paypal thing. I’m not trying to get rich, I just have to pay for small things like the domain name and paying WordPress for hosting it without putting .wordpress.com in the URL.

  8. I’ve got you up, but I try to respect bloggers’ rights to post whomever they want on their blogrolls, since it’s kind of free adverts, so feel free to put mine up or don’t, and no skin off my back either way.

  9. Cara-he, there’s an option somewhere in your WP preferences to make the link automatically show up. It makes no sense that that’s not the default, but I had to figure the same thing out when I first joined.

  10. I have a couple blogs and my own personal website that I’m trying to get a forum going on. Only for cool people though. And I think you’re cool.
